The currency of Bhutan is called the Ngultrum, with the currency sign Nu. It is divided into 100 smaller units called Chetrum (Ch). Ngultrum has been in existence since 1974 as an official currency after replacing the rupee at par. The latest series of Ngultrum has the denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000. Coins are available in denominations of Ch1, Ch5, Ch10, Ch25, Ch50, and Nu1.
Ngultrum is equal in value to that of an Indian Rupee. The Indian Rupee is acceptable all over Bhutan except for the denominations of Rs. 500 and Rs. 100.
There are several banks and money exchange centers in Bhutan that change your local currency to Ngultrum. The exchange rate may differ at times due to fluctuations in the US dollar. The ngultrum does not exchange independently with other nations’ currencies but is interchangeable with the Indian rupee. Major debit and credit card services are available in the major cities, but it is advised to carry ample cash and traveler’s checks for your convenience.
