Overview of Punakha Winter Trek

The Punakha Winter Trek is a 7-day cultural and trekking adventure that combines a scenic 3-day Himalayan trek with visits to Bhutan’s most iconic cultural landmarks.

Also known as the Divine Madman Trek, this easy-to-moderate journey follows ancient trails linking the hills near Thimphu with the fertile Punakha Valley, passing through peaceful forests, mountain ridges, traditional villages, and historic monasteries.

Reaching a maximum altitude of approximately 3,400 meters, the trek remains accessible during winter, offering clear mountain views, pleasant daytime temperatures, and quieter trails than Bhutan’s higher-altitude routes.

Beyond the trek, the itinerary showcases some of western Bhutan’s most celebrated cultural and historical landmarks. Discover the magnificent Punakha Dzong, cross the scenic Dochula Pass with its 108 memorial stupas and sweeping Himalayan views, and explore the historic Chorten Ningpo Monastery, closely associated with the legendary Buddhist master Drukpa Kunley.

The journey concludes with a rewarding hike to the world-famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), Bhutan’s most sacred monastery, dramatically perched on a cliff overlooking the Paro Valley.

Throughout the journey, you’ll experience Bhutan’s rich Buddhist heritage, traditional architecture, warm local culture, and diverse landscapes filled with blue pine, oak, rhododendron, and bamboo forests.

This fully guided tour includes licensed Bhutanese guides, comfortable hotel accommodation, completely supported camping during the trek, private transportation, meals, trekking permits, Bhutan visa assistance, the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), and all essential logistics for a smooth and worry-free experience.

Whether you’re a first-time trekker, nature lover, photographer, or cultural traveler, the Bhutan Punakha Winter Trek offers the perfect introduction to Bhutan, combining gentle Himalayan trekking, breathtaking scenery, and the country’s most treasured cultural landmarks into one unforgettable journey.
