Bhutan’s primary tourist routes are generally in good condition, with most major highways being well-paved and suitable for travel throughout the year. However, due to the country’s mountainous terrain, occasional road maintenance, widening projects, and monsoon-related landslides may cause temporary delays.
Paro – Thimphu – Punakha/Wangdue
The highway connecting Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and Wangdue Phodrang is fully blacktopped and well maintained. It is the busiest tourist route in Bhutan and offers a comfortable driving experience under normal weather conditions.
Wangdue Phodrang – Gangtey (Phobjikha Valley)
The road to Gangtey (Phobjikha Valley) is mostly paved and in good condition. Some sections may experience temporary construction work or road improvements, so travel times can occasionally be longer than expected.
Gangtey – Trongsa – Bumthang
The highway connecting Gangtey, Trongsa, and Bumthang is largely blacktopped and suitable for regular vehicles. While road widening and maintenance continue on certain stretches, most tourist vehicles can travel comfortably. During the monsoon season (June to September), travelers should expect possible delays due to road maintenance or landslides.
